"Design Insider has totally changed the way I shop for my home. What used to be hours spent scouring the internet, always in pursuit of finding the best discount on big ticket items, has now turned into a streamlined process of flipping through the rolodex based on my specific need. The concept of trade programs had always intimidated me, but the step-by-step guidance in signing up has given me the confidence to apply and get amazing discounts!"

—SARA BARGE

My story is both unique and SO common in the design world. Design Insider is a place where I share my contacts, trade discounts, and all my design secrets with anyone who is interested.

I’m not sure how much you know about the interior design industry, but here’s the dirty little secret: it’s not a team sport. Design Insider is about rejecting this club mentality. We make membership available and valuable to everyone from everyday designers to seasoned professionals in the industry.

I’m Amanda Wyatt, self-taught interior designer and founder of Design Insider. What I love about design is the power it has to impact people in the spaces I create.

Things I don’t love? Outdated, biased systems—but I’m also not afraid to fix them.

A GLIMPSE INSIDE THE ROLODEX

  • In Common With is a design studio that, for the most part, makes lights, and is widely known for their simple, striking, and calm aesthetic. In Common With strives to find a unique balance of design and engineering that allows each material element to stand out as more singular—matte amber glass, a pendant flipped over and affixed to the wall, or clay that looks like stretched linen. Their Brooklyn based studio is very adept at customization if your project requires it.

  • These are contemporary lights that still feel right at home in a dark, moody, or traditional environment. How fun is that?!

    • On the footer of the webpage, click “trade” on the third column.

    • This will take you to their trade program page, where you will select “apply for a trade account.”

    • You will then submit an online application where they request the following information:

      • First and last name, email address, phone number, company name, types of projects, full business address.

    • You will need to provide a valid business license in interior design or architecture or valid EIN or Resale Certificate.

    • If you intend to purchase for resale, you must supply a resale or tax certificate (ST-120).

    • Once your application is accepted, you will receive an email from sales@incommonwith.com to “activate your account” and create a password for your trade account.

FOUR HANDS

  • Unceasing global exploration keeps Four Hands connected to how the world is shaping products and the way we decorate our dwellings. From early backpacking trips through Southeast Asia to continued exploration of the world’s cities, villages and back alley markets, Four Hands is on an endless quest for inspiration. Their tenacious curiosity ensures that no design opportunity is missed as they merge the cultures, experiences and materials of their travels into the wide range of styles for which they are known.

  • Four Hands is very well known in the professional interior design space for budget-friendly furniture and decor items that have a global contemporary feel with a lot of clean lines and warm materiality. It’s a good place to shop for wooden furniture, like side tables and cabinets, and also for interesting lounge chairs that won’t break the bank. One thing to keep in mind is that you cannot even browse the Four Hands inventory without a trade account. Their website requires a customer number and password to log in. They also cannot deliver to residential addresses, so you must have a commercial address or ship to a storage unit in order to receive their products. If you live locally in Austin, you can also arrange to pick up items in person at their warehouse.

    • To sign up for a trade account, click “to the trade” on the website header.

    • You will complete the “become a customer” application.

    • The application will ask the following:

      • Business type, are you part of a firm, do you have a storefront, business address information, and contact information.

    • Once submitted, the vendor will review your application and be in touch in three business days.

    • Once approved, you’ll receive a confirmation email, which gives you 24/7 secure online access to shop and manage your orders.
